The red canyon of Boom valley and the Burana Tower
For whom seeks an active and cultural adventure: Discover Kurgan Terek Canyon and Balasagun on a day trip from Bishkek
Embark on a hike through the picturesque Kurgan Terek Canyon, where the Kurgan Terek River has sculpted stunning red rock formations. Navigate narrow paths along the river, occasionally wading through its waters, to experience the canyon's natural beauty up close.
After the hike, explore the remnants of the ancient city of Balasagun, established by the Karakhanids in the 9th century. Highlights include the iconic Burana Tower, grave markers, earthworks, and remnants of a castle and three mausoleums. Visitors can climb the tower using an external staircase and winding stairway to reach its top, once towering at 45 meters (148 feet) but reduced to 25 meters (82 feet) after earthquakes in the 15th century. A 1970s restoration project stabilized the tower and preserved its historical significance, with the entire site now serving as a museum displaying artifacts and providing historical insights into Balasagun's cultural heritage.

We had a wonderful 15 days in Kyrgyzstan and wholeheartedly recommend Nomad's Land to anyone the country would tempt - and believe us it is worth it! The team is as competent as it is cheerful and dynamic, with a real desire for ecotourism (it's not just marketing at home and that's a pleasure) and exploring off-track trails. We were able to walk the Kyrgyz mountain trails alone in the world, at our (good) walking pace and having the impression of being Kyrgyz for a little while in our life. A huge thank you to all the team who greatly contributed to such a success of our trip, we hope to have the chance to come back to see you one day!
Returning from a two-week trip to Kyrgyzstan, a custom journey organized with Nomad's Land was chosen for its "ecotourism" approach. The agency is highly recommended for its ability to cater to desires for a trip combining the discovery of magnificent landscapes, interaction with the local population, and accommodations as much as possible with locals, along with a cultural aspect. The trip preparation was very smooth, starting with a phone interview followed by a few adjustments. The French-speaking guide, Malpalbek, took care from arrival to departure, showcasing an excellent knowledge of his country and sharing numerous anecdotes that helped immerse in the atmosphere of Kyrgyzstan. The adventure included hiking in incredible sites, horseback riding, meeting felt carpet makers (and even making a carpet), witnessing the yurt-making process (both exterior and interior weaving), attending the training of a golden eagle with a falconer, observing the stages of making a komuz (stringed instrument), and the production of cream and cheese. Visits included the caravanserai of Tash Rabat and the Burana Tower, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. Covering approximately 2000 km over 15 days, the nights were spent in yurts and guesthouses with locals. The journey couldn't have been more successful, offering excellent value for money for a private trip with a guide and driver for two people. Wishing the same wonderful journey for future travelers!
